What is a Derecho Storm?

On May 16th, the Houston metropolitan area was hit by a powerful derecho storm, leaving over 1 million services without power and causing between $5-7 billion in damages. This event highlighted the importance of understanding what a derecho is and how it impacts our lives.

Definition of a Derecho

A derecho is a widespread, long-lasting wind storm that is associated with a line of fast-moving showers or thunderstorms. Unlike hurricanes and tornadoes, which have rotating winds, derechos are characterized by straight-line winds.

Key Characteristics of a Derecho

  • Widespread Damage: Derechos can cause extensive damage over a large area, often hundreds of miles long and tens of miles wide.
  • Long-Lived: These storms can last for several hours, covering great distances.
  • Straight-Line Winds: Winds in a derecho can exceed 100 mph, similar to hurricane-force winds, but they blow in a straight line.
  • Fast-Moving: Derechos typically move rapidly, at speeds of 50-70 mph, allowing them to cover large areas quickly.
  • Thunderstorm-Associated: They form along lines of intense thunderstorms, which can also produce heavy rain, hail, and frequent lightning.

Derechos in the United States most commonly occur along two axes. One extends along the “Corn Belt” from the upper Mississippi Valley southeast into the Ohio Valley, and the other from the southern Plains northeast into the mid Mississippi Valley (figure below). During the cool season (September through April), derechos are relatively infrequent but are most likely to occur from east Texas into the southeastern states. Impact of Derecho Storms

  • Power Outages: Strong winds can knock down trees, power lines, and utility poles, leading to widespread and prolonged power outages.
  • Structural Damage: Buildings, roofs, vehicles, and other structures can suffer severe damage or destruction.
  • Injuries and Fatalities: The sudden and severe nature of derechos can result in injuries or fatalities, especially if people are caught outside or in unprotected areas.
  • Economic Costs: The damage from derechos can be extensive, leading to significant economic costs for repairs, recovery, and emergency response.

Preparing for a Derecho

  • Stay Informed: Pay attention to weather alerts and warnings from meteorological agencies.
  • Secure Property: Ensure outdoor furniture, vehicles, and other items are secured to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
  • Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit with essentials such as water, food, flashlights, and batteries.
  • Safe Shelter: Know where to seek safe shelter, such as a basement or interior room, during severe weather.

Understanding what a derecho is and how to prepare for one can help minimize the impact and ensure safety during these powerful storms. The recent event in Houston serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness and preparedness in the face of extreme weather.
